Power cut causes disrupton

Two power stations disconnected from the National Grid for 15 minutes earlier this month, but caused havoc for rail commuters.

While two power stations shutting down at the same time is a ‘very rare incident’, they can cause a ‘domino effect’ where other generators struggle to make up for the shortfall in power, according to a BBC report. The problem was caused by a drop in electrical frequency which can be dangerous and cause damange to the UK electricity infrastructure.

The problems were resolved within 15 minutes though this led to delays for train travellers because of safety requirements, according to Network Rail.

An investigation into the causes of the outage is being undertaken.
