A new report published by DECC has revealed that the UK is missing a huge opportunity for commercial electricity savings.
The report ‘Capturing the full electricity efficiency potential in the UK’ states that the largest potential electricity savings remain in the non-residential sector although under existing policies, little of the potential will be realised.
Lighting control systems in commercial buildings would have a significant impact, potentially delivering greater electricity savings by 2030 than all residential building electricity and requiring less up-front investment.
In addition, tightening appliance standards and better product labelling would be of benefit. Encouraging action in the commercial sector requires a ‘change in policy beyond simple awareness-raising’.
